YUASA LAUNCHES NEW RANGE OF AUTOMOTIVE BATTERIES FOR CLASSIC VEHICLE APPLICATIONS
Yuasa Battery has added a new series of automotive batteries designed to meet the requirements of classic vehicle owners.
Yuasa Classic batteries cover specific historical fitments and meet all the original performance requirements set out by the vehicle manufacturers. Owners of vehicles such as Morris Minors, VW Beetles (original models), MGB GTs, London RouteMaster Buses, 1950s delivery vans and similar require batteries of this design and will find the Yuasa Classic range an ideal solution.
The Yuasa Classic range offers 6V and 12V hard rubber designs offering capacities from 56 to 260Ah (at 20h rate) featuring a “heavy grid” design aimed directly at the cyclic requirements of this unique market.
Classic batteries by design are built to conform to the vibration resistance criteria set out by EN50342:2006. This is particularly useful for applications where a vehicle is constantly travelling over uneven terrain. With a conventional battery, constant vibration can cause the active material in the plates to come away from the grids, a fault that can very quickly lead to battery failure.
Yuasa Classic batteries also conform to the relevant section of EN50342:2006 for maintenance free characteristics (LWL – low water loss) meaning that, when used in approved vehicle applications that operate in normal conditions, it is not necessary to add water to the battery. Classic batteries are maintenance possible, not impossible so that water levels can be topped up if water loss does occur. Excess water loss can occur in many circumstances, among the most common being charging system faults, prolonged operation in hot climates and excessive off-vehicle charging.
The new Classic batteries are traditionally designed for specific heavy duty applications. Battery designs are based on thick high density active materials that deliver the ultimate performance for the traditional applications requiring these batteries. Some lower cost alternatives are based on standard automotive plate technologies that are designed for starting power. As a consequence, although the ratings may look similar or even greater, experience will quickly show the reduced life of such products in the field.
